No More PR?
Everyone has seen the images of how much plastic is in the ocean and how much the planet is being ruined by not enough people recycling. So one YouTuber, Samantha Ravndahl, has decided that taking herself off of PR lists and saying no to free gifts is going to help end this. In her recent video No More PR... she discusses the amount of parcels she would receive and the amount of unnessecary packaging they would come in. Some even came with screens that cannot be recycled, therefore they would end up in landfill. Samantha also thinks that by going out and physically buying products herself, it will make her think about what is actually needed and what isn't. This may also make people trust her opinions more as nothing she has will be free, linking back to my previous post about trusting beauty bloggers.
The problems addressed with the beauty industry and their PR, are that the brands are trying to push out products so fast to stay relevant and stay on top, that the quality has gone down and the products are not as good as they used to be. But the brands are increasing prices, which is affecting the people purchasing their products and not the people receiving them for free.
It was also mentioned that when you buy online shipping can be $20, but when the same thing it sent as PR, its gets sent for free? Until they reach their destination. As Samantha lives in Canada, and most of the items are shipped from America, she has to pay import tax, so these 'free' PR gifts ending up costing her money, sometimes $100s, for things she may not necessarily want or use.
There are so many PR packages sent out now, that when people get them and feature them on instagram or snapchat stories, they often get so long that viewers skip through and do not pay attention to the whole thing, so the brands will not get the airtime they were aiming for.
If more influencers, who give the publicity to the brands, take this stance and stop receiving PR, it may make the brands think about how much they send out and the amount of packaging they use. Using less plastic and more recyclable packaging will also help improve the brands images, as it will be showing that they care more about the environment.
This video has definitely given brands something to think about in terms of how often they send out press packages and how they package them. Hopefully it will encourage a positive change in the future.
